Developed by the Rapala® product development team over a two-year period, ultraviolet (UV) technology enhances the visibility of lure finishes under the greatest range of water conditions. UV technology reflects UVA light waves that penetrate the water column - much deeper than visible light - and in periods of low visible light, such as dawn, dusk and overcast conditions. Lures coated with Rapala’s UV Bright technology reflect more light energy, strengthening a lure’s visibility in low light conditions.

There may be no angler more versed on the power of UV Bright finishes than walleye pro Mark Martin. A professional walleye angler for more than three decades, Martin has fished nearly every important walleye fishery in North America both day and night, including his home waters of Mich. where he resides on the eastern side of Lake Michigan, near Muskegon, Mich.
Fishing with Storm lures featuring UV Bright finishes over the past year, Martin has observed that the lures with UV Bright definitely outshine lures without UV Bright in dingy waters, like the Mississippi River or stained waters, like that in waters of the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) of Michigan and northern Wisconsin, such as Winneconne near Lake Winnebago, Wis. Martin’s go-to dirty water lures are the Storm® Thunderstick® MadFlash (JR and Deep JR) and the Wiggle Wart® MadFlash in green fire and mossy orange fire patterns.

When targeting suspended walleyes, Martin either trolls Thunderstick MadFlash and Wiggle Wart MadFlash lures with 10 lb. monofilament for suspended walleyes with planer boards, or long lines these lures.

“When I’m long-lining these lures behind the boat in low light conditions, I like to run these same lures tight to structure, allowing them to come into contact with weeds, wood, and rocks,” says Martin, who varies the amount of line he puts out based on the depth of water or where the fish are located in the waters column.

Martin says the key in using lures with UV Bright finishes is you don’t have to put these lures right on the nostrils of a walleye because the walleye can see these UV Bright lures from a greater distance.

“These lures will definitely up your game and give you that extra edge,” he adds.
In addition, Martin has noticed that walleye tend to strike Storm lures with UV Bright out of aggression. More hook-ups on the sides of the mouth and near the gills means walleye are slashing at the Storm baits before crunching them. Because Storm lures are built with super sharp premium Black Nickel VMC® hooks, that means more hook-ups.
On Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes, it’s not uncommon for Storm lures with UV Bright to catch the eye of great sight feeders like salmon or all the trout species, too, notes Martin, who catches his fair share of salmon and trout while trolling for walleye on the Great Lakes.
“These Storm lures with UV Bright are like attaching a magnet to the end of your line,” says Martin. “These lures will give you the extra edge you need on dark waters.”
